How do tubular heaters work?

The working principle of tubular heaters is known for its efficiency. At the core of the heater is a high-resistance wire, typically made from nickel-chromium alloy such as NiCr 80/20, which acts as the heating element. This wire is encapsulated in a metal sheath, such as stainless steel, which provides protection and enhances the heater’s durability. The space between the heating element and the sheath is filled with magnesium oxide (MgO) powder, a highly effective thermal insulator. This insulator not only ensures efficient heat transfer from the wire to the sheath but also electrically insulates the element, preventing any risk of short-circuits or electrical hazards. This heat is then conducted through the MgO powder and distributed evenly across the surface of the metal sheath. Depending on the application, this heat can be transferred directly to a solid, liquid, or gaseous medium.

Cartridge heaters have the same working principle as tubular heaters. However, tubular heaters are more suitable for applications that require heating over a larger area, such as air heating, liquid immersion, and radiant heating systems.
