Which thin-film RTD sensor type do I need?

What is a thin film RTD sensor?

A thin-film RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) measures temperature through the change in electrical resistance of platinum. In a thin-film RTD sensor, an ultra-thin platinum layer is applied to a ceramic substrate and protected by a glass micro-coating. This construction creates a compact sensor with resistance to thermal shock, vibration and environmental influences.

What are the advantages of thin-film RTD sensors?

  • Less metal is required. This makes thin film RTD sensors a  cost-effective solution for accurate measurement.
  • The flat profile and small size mean the sensor will fit in many instrumentation and industrial control applications.
  • The lead wires allow for easy  interfacing with instrumentation. These can be attached via crimping, brazing, welding or soldering.
  • Different resistance levels mean a wide range in temperature measurement.
  • Thin film sensors have a resistance of Pt50 (50 ohms), Pt100 (100 ohms), Pt500  (500 ohms) or Pt1000 (1000 ohms) at 0°C. This range makes them very versatile in application.

The suitability of a thin-film RTD depends on the required temperature range, tolerance, nominal resistance, dimensions and environmental conditions.

Where are thin-film RTD sensors used?

Thin film RTD sensors come in a variety of sizes, shapes and tolerance options including DIN Class A and DIN Class B variants. The different resistance levels: Pt50; Pt100; Pt500;  Pt1000  mean they fit a wide range in temperature measurement needs.

This design and temperature versatility combined with ruggedness and durability makes thin film sensors the ideal RTD sensor for many industrial applications including:

  • Refining and petrochemical industries
  • Analytical and medical equipment
  • Aerospace technology
  • Automotive industry
  • Power and energy generation
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning)
  • Instrumentation

The thin film sensors differ primarily in operating temperature range. The min/max operating temperature of your application must fall within the operating range specified for the part.

Can Pt100 and Pt1000 thin-film sensors be supplied with extension wires?

Yes. Pt100 and Pt1000 thin-film sensors can be supplied with extension wires for integration into assemblies, probes and electric motor windings. This configuration is used where a compact and vibration-resistant RTD solution is required.

In electric motors, thin film RTD sensors with extension wires are commonly used for end winding hotspot detection, especially in small and medium-sized motors, industrial drives, HVAC systems and automotive applications.
