Type S bare thermocouple wire
Type S, Pt10%Rh-Pt thermocouple is a thermocouple junction often used for extreme high temperatures. Type S, Pt10%Rh-Pt shares a lot of characteristics with type R, Pt13%Rh-Pt thermocouple, but type R has a higher Seebeck coefficient than type S. Temperature range of type S, Pt10%Rh-Pt thermocouple wire is 0°C to +1600°C.
The thermocouple type S is designed for continuous use in oxidizing or inert atmospheres at temperatures up to 1600°C and can withstand brief periods up to 1700°C. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause degradation of the thermocouple, including the possibility of rhodium diffusion into the pure platinum conductor, which results in a reduction in output. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of potential embrittlement caused by the environment.

Environment and industrial usage
Type S thermocouples are crucial in sectors where precision at high temperatures is essential. They play a significant role in aerospace (jet engine control), chemical (sensitive technologies), nuclear, glass (softening processes), steel, automotive (safety sensors), military, and electrical industries. Additionally, they are instrumental in temperature measurement for medical devices, as well as in science and research.
In practical applications, these thermocouples are used in the glass and semiconductor industries. They are also routinely used in the electric arc furnace process in the steel industry to accurately measure steel temperature before tapping.
Type S its high accuracy and stability also make it suitable for lower temperature applications.
The type S thermocouple wire can also be used in MI thermocouple cable. More about MI cable with type S thermocouple.
