Kamet’s mineral insulated cables are produced by our long-standing partners, two world class manufacturers: Okazaki manufacturing company and ARi industries. Okazaki manufacturing company is the largest mineral insulated cable manufacturer in the world. With six factory locations, Okazaki offers a large production capacity and has positioned itself as a leader in the industrial temperature sensor market, holding significant market share.

ARi industries focusses on special types of MI cable with refactory metals, custom made heating solutions with MI cable and exotic thermocouples.

Under the brand name AerOpak®, Okazaki’s mineral insulated metal sheathed cable is produced. AerOpak® is designed to withstand high pressure and can be used for a wide temperature range from -270°C to 1260°C. It is thus ideal for hazardous and high temperature environments across a wide range of industries. Every single coil or each batch of AerOpak® mineral insulated thermocouple cable is calibrated to ensure IEC60584 class 1, ASTM E230 special limits or AMS2750 E/F. Full traceability is guaranteed.

Overview of mineral insulated thermocouple cables

Why use mineral insulated cable?

MI thermocouple cables can provide stable and fast temperature measurement readings and are often used for high temperatures (up to 1250°C) in hazardous environments. The purpose of the mineral insulation (MgO) is to provide better insulation resistance at high temperatures.

RTD cable in contrast to thermocouple cable are limited to a maximum temperature of 500°C. Thermocouple cable can go up to 1600°C. RTD sensors however are superior to thermocouples in that their readings are more accurate and they produce more stable readings over a longer period of time.

Advantages over conventional thermocouple cables

  • Wide temperature range
    The Okazaki MI thermocouple cables Kamet supplies, can be used for a wide temperature range from -270°C to 1,260°C. Conventional thermocouple cables have a much smaller temperature range. An even broader temperature range can be achieved by our high temperature thermocouples, produced by ARi Industries.
  • Excellent uniformity
    Okazaki manufactures long MI cables with inorganic insulators that are solidly packed with a specific unique technology.
  • Easy handling
    The MI thermocouple cables have a bending radius of at least 2 times longer than the outer diameter of the MI cable. This way, the MI cables can be easily installed at various sites with bends. The cables can be wound in coils easily.
  • Longer product life time
    Due to the insulation of chemically stable material Magnesium Oxide, the MI cables have much longer life times than conventional cables. Due to the compact structure of the insulation, the thermocouple wires are airtight, resulting in a longer life time as well. Furthermore, the outer sheath material is designed to survive in hazardous environments.
  • Mechanical strength
    The Okazaki MI cables can be used at the most demanding environments. The outer sheath & compact magnesium oxide insulation provides protection for corrosive atmospheres and vibration.
  • Insulation material
    Okazaki uses magnesium oxides for the standard MI cables. However, we can also supply aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) for special purposes.

Heaters supplied by Kamet are widely used in our UHV manipulators and reaction cells for controlled sample heating. Their compact diameter, flexibility, and high-temperature capability make them well suited for integration into confined geometries typical of ultra-high vacuum systems. In UHV manipulators, these heaters enable precise control of sample temperature during surface preparation, annealing, thin-film growth, and catalytic studies. The manipulators often provide multi-axis motion (XYZ translation and rotation) while maintaining pressures in the 10⁻⁹–10⁻¹⁰ mbar range. Low outgassing and vacuum compatibility are therefore critical. The hermetically sealed, magnesium-oxide insulated construction ensures minimal contamination and stable operation during bake-out procedures. In reaction cells attached to UHV systems, heaters from Kamet allow localized heating under controlled gas atmospheres, enabling in-situ studies of surface reactions, oxidation, reduction, or catalytic processes. Their robustness and uniform heat distribution support reproducible thermal conditions while preserving vacuum integrity in adjacent chambers.
